Cao Lan Hamlet – A mountain hideaway of stirring moments

Ta La Cà |

artLIVE – Tucked amid rolling emerald hills, Cao Lan Hamlet revives three-decade-old stilt houses in their purest, rustic form, offering a serene retreat where tranquility feels beautifully timeless.

As the year draws to a close and the city rushes through its final plans, the soul wavers ever so slightly with the shifting of the seasons. In those moments, I don’t seek the sea, nor do I return to the familiar streets of Đà Lạt. I crave a place where clouds meet the wind, where every step feels like entering a sanctuary shaped by nature and sky.

And so I found myself at Cao Lan Hamlet – a quiet mountain hideaway tucked along the slopes of Sapung in Bảo Lộc – a place that won me over in the most unexpectedly gentle way.

About 15 kilometers from central of Bảo Lộc, Cao Lan Hamlet reveals itself across seven hectares of lush, undulating hills. Here, the traditional stilt houses of the Cao Lan people appear and disappear between canopies of trees and drifting veils of mist. Amid this landscape, each stilt house, over three decades old and crafted from carefully collected rosewood, has been faithfully restored with deep respect for cultural heritage, creating a retreat that feels both intimate and quietly poetic.

Weathered terracotta roofs, wooden eaves glowing under the first light of morning or turning golden in the soft hue of dusk, together, they create a symphony of light and architecture. An earthy-orange villa peeks from the hilltop, an infinity pool clings gracefully to the mountainside embracing the entire Loc Thanh valley, and a restaurant crowned with an arched roof inspired by aircraft hangars, crafted from reclaimed wood, completes the scene. All of it seems to whisper: “Slow down. Listen. And feel.”

Time at Cao Lan Hamlet carries the scent of wind and the song of leaves

I wander along winding paths that curve around the mountainside, breathing in the scent of fresh pine and dew-soaked earth, listening to the lively calls of forest birds and the gentle rustle of leaves, a soft melody of the highlands. The atmosphere here is more than just a retreat; it is a place where one quietly returns to oneself.

Sitting on the veranda of a stilt house, watching mist drift in and out of the mountains, every breath and every heartbeat seems to merge with the rhythm of the land and sky. At the infinity pool, where earth and heaven appear to meet, words feel too small to hold the quiet, overwhelming beauty of the moment.

Cao Lan Hamlet is not the kind of resort that dazzles with glamour, nor does it follow the fast-rising trend of homestays. It is a “mountain hamlet of emotions”, a place where everything feels simple, organic, and deeply personal. Mornings begin with birdsong. Afternoons melt into rosy sunsets. Evenings gather around warm meals or a glass of wine by the fireplace. Each moment here becomes a note in the delicate symphony of slow living.

A Dialogue Between Architecture and Nature

The stilt houses here stand as living testaments to the patience and endurance of two generations of Cao Lan craftsmen, from buffaloes hauling timber through the forest to the meticulous hands that restored each beam. Every house is more than a structure; it is a cultural narrative told through wood, craftsmanship, and a deep affection for humanity. It bridges old memories with contemporary living, staying warm through winter’s chill and cool beneath the height of summer.

The restaurant’s recycled-wood dome is assembled by hand, like a puzzle woven from light. Each wooden piece catches sun and wind, shifting in color throughout the day, making the traveler’s heart tremble ever so softly with the rhythm of nature.

Experiences at Cao Lan Hamlet go far beyond architecture. You can trek to Tàng Kinh Các for meditation or a quiet read, join a pizza-making workshop, soak in herbal baths, pick tea leaves, plant trees, or harvest seasonal coffee and fruits. These seemingly simple activities are the hamlet’s way of inviting visitors to sync with the rhythm of nature, discovering a deeper connection with themselves and the local community.

Cao Lan Hamlet is also committed to sustainability, having planted five thousand pine trees and over a thousand multi-species forest trees, creating a forest garden for the future. Each young sapling sown is a promise to the land, the forest, and the generations to come. Cao Lan Hamlet is thus not only a place to rest, but also a place to give back to nature.

The culinary experience here is equally distinctive. From a nourishing, diverse breakfast to carefully curated lunch and dinner menus that blend Vietnamese and European flavors, to “taste-challenging” dishes paired with beer or wine, every meal is meticulously prepared, delicious, visually striking, and harmoniously in tune with the natural scenery outside.

With stilt houses priced from 3.9 to 4.5 million VND per night and standalone villas around 11 million VND, every experience here feels worth it: soaking in an herbal bath on the veranda, practicing yoga amid the forest, or meditating to the rustle of leaves, each moment weaves a complete, unforgettable emotional journey.

Cao Lan Hamlet is where nature, culture, and green architecture converge; a place where emotions are cherished, where the soul softens and finds balance. This mountain hamlet is more than a destination, it is an artistic experience, a gentle melody that lingers in the heart. Even after you leave, its echo remains, like clouds drifting over Sapung’s peaks, like the tender breath of Bao Loc’s land and sky.

If you are seeking a place to pause amidst life’s hurried pace, listen to that symphony – Cao Lan Hamlet, a small yet profoundly serene mountain hamlet, where every moment is painted with light, wind, and the colors of nature.
